The Energy and Water Agency, in collaboration with the Malta Council for the Voluntary Sector (MCVS), has announced the fifth call of the Energy and Water Efficiency Scheme, offering up to €27,000 in funding for voluntary organisations (VOs). The initiative is designed to help VOs improve energy and water efficiency in their premises, thereby reducing emissions, cutting utility costs, and increasing operational sustainability.

Since its launch three years ago, the scheme has allocated €1.8 million in funds and supported over 85 VOs across Malta. Beneficiaries of past calls have included sports clubs, band clubs, and social support groups, with over 120 interventions made. Projects have ranged from installing solar water heaters and LED lighting to replacing inefficient air-conditioning systems and upgrading kitchen and cleaning equipment.

At the scheme’s press launch, Minister for the Environment, Energy and Public Cleanliness, Miriam Dalli, noted the programme’s growing success. “Our goal is to ensure no one is left behind in Malta’s transition to sustainability,” she said. “This transition must be fair and inclusive, and voluntary organisations are a key part of that effort.”

Minister for Inclusion and the Voluntary Sector, Julia Farrugia, emphasised the important social role of VOs, stating, “Voluntary organisations are the backbone of our communities. Supporting them with the right tools ensures they can deliver essential services effectively and sustainably.”

Manuel Sapiano, CEO of the Energy and Water Agency, emphasised the Agency’s ongoing commitment to supporting the voluntary sector through practical sustainability “This scheme reflects the Agency’s commitment to helping voluntary organisations reduce energy and water consumption, cut utility costs, and operate more efficiently as part of Malta’s wider environmental goals”.

The relaunch of the call continues to reaffirm the government’s support to VOs in enhancing their community services through sustainable practices. The reduction in energy consumption and utility expenses enables these organisations to redirect savings toward furthering their social and cultural missions.

The application for the Energy and Water Efficiency Scheme will open on the 15th of July. For interested VOs, an information session will be held on the 25th of June 2025 to provide the necessary information and address any questions related to the application process.
