Grade 5 and 6 students from St Margaret’s Primary School Vittoriosa recently took part in an educational walk through Birgu, organised by the Energy and Water Agency as part of the Alter Aqua programme. The walk followed the Alter Aqua Reservoir Trail, which highlights the historic water systems hidden beneath one of Malta’s oldest localities.
As they made their way through Birgu’s narrow streets, students discovered twelve underground reservoirs that have long played an important role in the area’s water management. Some were used in the past to support everyday needs, such as providing water for bread production, while others have now been restored and brought back into use through the Alter Aqua project. Today, several of these reservoirs help support green spaces around the town.

The experience also gave students a deeper appreciation of their own locality. Alongside learning about the reservoirs, they were introduced to different aspects of Birgu’s history and heritage. For many, it was the first time visiting certain parts of their hometown. A few even shared how surprised they were to discover places they had never seen before.
To support their learning, each student received a pack of Alter Aqua educational cards filled with facts, illustrations, maps, and stories about the reservoirs they visited. These cards were created to help young people better understand and connect with Malta’s water history in a fun and accessible way.

The visit ended at the Birgu Local Council, where students were welcomed by the mayor Boxall. He spoke about the council’s involvement in the Alter Aqua project and explained how several reservoirs, including one beneath the main square and another within the council building have been restored and are now being used to help irrigate local greenery.
The event was organised by the Energy and Water Agency with the support of the Birgu Local Council and St Margaret’s Primary School Vittoriosa.
