The project will implement a state-of-the-art unsaturated zone monitoring network composed of a number of dedicated monitoring stations and data acquisition instrumentation for the unsaturated zone. The monitoring network shall encompass different site typologies, such as urban, agricultural and natural land-uses, and traverse different geological formations. This monitoring network will provide information on the fluxes and chemical composition of the water percolating through the unsaturated zone and will provide the base for an accurate and reliable assessment of the quantity and quality of groundwater recharge. The newly acquired information will also provide new insights into the relationship between land use management and groundwater resources protection.
