In collaboration with the Chamber of Engineers, the Energy and Water Agency (EWA) planted sixty trees in Milbrae Grove, Mosta, to recognise the excellent work carried out by the companies that participated in the Energy and Water Sustainability Award, this award is part of the Malta Engineering Excellence Award 2025 (MEEA).
The Agency has been sponsoring this Award for the sixth consecutive year which aims to recognise private enterprises that implement projects with a significant impact on their energy and water consumption.
The winner of the 2025 Award was Multigas Ltd for its upgrade of the Aspen 1000 Water Cooling System, achieving a 10% reduction in total site energy consumption, over 85% water savings, and a payback period of 22 months. The first and second runners-up were Baxter Ltd and Hilton Malta respectively. Overall, the Award has received 28 nominations to date, reflecting Malta’s growing interest in sustainable operations.
During the event, Minister Miriam Dalli emphasised that sustainability is an ongoing process. She encouraged more enterprises to adopt energy and water efficiency approaches in their operations for a greener future.
Inġ. Charles Buttigieg, Chief Policy Officer at the Energy and Water Agency, expressed his satisfaction with another successful edition, which recorded a highest-ever number of submissions. This, he noted, clearly demonstrates the growing interest among enterprises, which continues to increase year after year.
Dr Inġ. Bonnie Attard, President at the Chamber of Engineers, highlighted that the Energy & Water Sustainability Award recognises entities that demonstrate outstanding leadership in safeguarding Malta’s most limited resources. In a country defined by water scarcity and a high dependence on imported energy, responsible resource management is a national imperative. This award highlights engineering solutions that directly support Malta’s commitments under the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those linked to clean energy, climate action, and sustainable water use.
The Chamber of Engineers is proud to continue its long-standing collaboration with the Energy & Water Agency, whose partnership strengthens the national drive toward measurable, high impact sustainability. This shared commitment is reflected through the recognition of exemplary projects with further fruition through joint initiatives, such as today’s tree planting event, that contribute tangibly to Malta’s environmental wellbeing and greening initiatives. Collective responsibility coupled with engineering excellence are key to shape a more resilient future for Malta and Gozo.
The Energy & Water Sustainability Award serves multiple objectives, including recognising private enterprises that implement impactful energy and water efficiency projects; providing a platform for enterprises to showcase their achievements; highlighting best practices to benefit local businesses; creating networking opportunities to share experiences and challenges in an informal setting; and promoting sustainability by awarding the winning enterprise a €4,000 voucher for employee capacity-building initiatives in sustainability.
The tree-planting initiative was attended by representatives from the Energy and Water Agency, the award winner, and the runners-up. Also present were members of the Chamber of Engineers and the Minister for the Environment, Energy and Public Cleanliness, Hon. Dr Miriam Dalli.
