SHARE-MedWATER

Project Description

Strategic Harmonization and Resource Enhancement in the Mediterranean

The SHARE.MedWATER project is a cross-border Mediterranean co-operation initiative aiming to transform how communities manage and reuse water. It brings together partners from seven countries to identify, test and upscale innovative technologies and governance models for the reuse of unconventional water sources, including rainwater harvesting, greywater reuse, and treated wastewater. The project’s core idea is to move beyond individual building-level installations and create “water communities” or district-scale systems in which reuse becomes normalized, reliable and integrated into regional water planning. By combining technological, regulatory and social-innovation strands, SHARE.MedWATER seeks to make water reuse a viable and scalable alternative, thereby reducing pressure on conventional freshwater resources while supporting climate resilience and sustainable development across the Mediterranean.

Objectives

  • Review and catalogue technological, regulatory, and governance options for unconventional water reuse (rainwater, greywater, treated wastewater) across participating Mediterranean regions.
  • Implement and validate these solutions through real-life pilot sites and district-scale water-sharing models, generating evidence on feasibility, performance, cost-effectiveness, and social acceptability.
  • Develop a Decision Support System (DSS) and a capacity-building framework to help policymakers, practitioners, and communities evaluate and implement reuse networks.
  • Support policy alignment and replication, enabling the water-community model to scale across Mediterranean territories facing water stress, climate impacts, and increasing demand.
