The project will make a detailed assessment of the primary and secondary hydrogeological characteristics to provide a better understanding of the islands’ natural groundwater systems. This shall be achieved through a detailed investigation of the occurrence of the geological strata across the Maltese islands by means of core drilling, through the undertaking of pumping tests to determine the transmissivity, storativity and hydraulic conductivity of rock formations,  and downhole geophysical assessments to provide information on rock fractures , lithology and mineralogy. This newly acquired information will improve the existing understanding of Malta’s natural groundwater systems and therefore enable better water resources management.
