The 1st LIFE IP RBMP Malta Capitalization Conference, hosted by the Energy and Water Agency (EWA) in collaboration with the Hellenic Republic Decentralised Administration Authority of Crete, was held on December 10-11, 2024, in Heraklion, Crete. This two-day event focused on an innovative “island water management toolkit” designed to tackle the unique challenges faced by Mediterranean islands.
On the first day, the conference began with opening remarks by EWA’s CEO, who underscored the importance of island-specific solutions:
“Technology adopters as islands can develop unique measures and adapt them to their context. Sharing experiences with island states facing similar challenges allows us to create a comprehensive management toolbox tailored for islands.”
At its core, the LIFE IP RBMP Malta project seeks to strengthen Malta’s River Basin Management Plans (RBMPs) initiative. This long-term effort aims to provide an adaptable and practical toolbox for island water management, addressing pressing issues such as water scarcity, extreme weather events, and the vulnerability of natural resources.
Followed by a presentation by EWA House Visit Officer delivered a captivating presentation promoting the House Visit Service. This free service, offered to all households in Malta, provides expert consultations on reducing energy and water consumption. Additionally, it caters to SMEs and vulnerable households at no cost, sharing valuable tips to promote sustainability and efficiency.
Our in-house Water Engineer tackled Water Demand Management, sharing very positive results achieved through targeted initiatives. The session highlighted successful examples of eco-label adoption and their tangible benefits, particularly for businesses. By integrating these sustainable practices, businesses can achieve significant advantages, including cost savings, improved resource efficiency, and enhanced environmental credibility.
Additionally, the Water Engineer revealed that a meeting with The Unified Water Label Association (UWLA) had taken place, yielding very positive feedback. Plans are now underway for a follow-up meeting with suppliers to identify the pros and cons they face and propose amendments, accordingly, ensuring a more effective implementation of eco-label standards.
The remainder of Day 1 featured focused sessions on Protecting Water Quality. Exploring topics from industrial discharge enforcement to monitoring pollutants and safeguarding water for human consumption. Marine Environment Integration: Offering insights into reverse osmosis discharge impacts, hydrographic modelling, and research on marine discharges. Complementary Projects: Showcasing innovative programs, including the Alteraqua Programme and Net-Zero Water Utility. Representatives from HYDROUSA presented an overview of their groundbreaking project with very positive results, focusing on innovative approaches to water management in Greece.
On the second day, the conference shifted to practical applications of water management toolkits for islands. Attendees participated in coordinated workshops, using hypothetical islands as case studies with specific issues and challenges. These case studies provided a backdrop for fruitful discussions, exploring solutions and tools to address water management challenges in similar scenarios. The workshops facilitated the exchange of ideas and highlighted opportunities for collaboration.
The conference also fostered increased cooperation between diverse stakeholders, including island representatives, academia, funding authorities, and local authorities. This collaboration is vital for advancing sustainable water management practices across Mediterranean islands.
