Groundwater management in nitrate vulnerable areas with agriculture activities was the underlying theme of the 3-day event organised by the Energy & Water Agency (EWA) between the 1st and 3rd October 2024 at the Seaview Hotel (Bugibba) as part of the Interreg Europe GEMS and the Interreg Euro-MED Clepsydra projects.

Participating associations from various European regions were gathered in Malta to kick off a new semester of activities for both projects. The focus was on identifying and exchanging good practices on regional groundwater analysis among project partner territories, through an interregional learning process aiming to adapt imported practices to local contexts, by engaging local stakeholders for their support.

In the framework of the 2nd GEMS Transnational Meeting, the assembly’s work started with the First Transnational Learning Workshop, focusing on groundwater data and monitoring, and featured presentations of good practices by partners in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Malta, Slovakia, and Spain. In the second half of the day, project partners convened in a project meeting to discuss issues related to the project communication and financial management for a smooth conclusion of the first 6 months of activities.

On the 2nd of October, all participants from the partner organisations involved in the GEMS and Clepsydra projects had the chance to take part in a full-day study visit organised by EWA that included the Unsaturated Zone Monitoring Network (Ir-Rabat); the Multi-level sampling depth Monitoring Network (Il-Bahrija); Upper Coralline Limestone Natural Spring (Sampling Station at Misraħ Suffara, Ħad-Dingli). The day concluded at the Ghajn National Water Conservation Awareness Centre, where EWA presented the centre’s objectives and its educational activities focused on water management issues.

The final day was dedicated to the 2nd Clepsydra Transnational Project Meeting, where project partners presented the ongoing activities and discussed the technical and financial aspects related to the start of the second semester of project implementation.
