The Għajn National Water Conservation Awareness Centre successfully hosted its fifth consecutive Open Weekend, drawing in more than 600 visitors over the course of two days. The event, held during on the 14th and 15th September, has become a staple of our annual calendar, which aims to raise awareness on the growing challenges faced by the water sector in the Maltese Islands. This year was no exception, with a series of engaging, educational activities designed to captivate both children and adults alike.
Families were able to join educational tours scheduled throughout the weekend, which offered valuable insights into sustainable water management practices. These tours provided practical tips and advice on water conservation and a deeper understanding of the importance of sustainability.
A family favourite was the ‘Water Cinema Time’ which featured a series of animated short films with entertaining stories and informative messages on water-saving tips. The creative animations kept audiences engaged while subtly delivering important messages on water conservation.
Children were treated to a range of interactive and educational activities throughout the event. The highly anticipated interactive theatre shows conveyed essential lessons about water conservation through captivating performances, while fun animations and games further highlighted the importance of preserving water resources.
Hands-on workshops allowed young participants the chance to get creative. Children enjoyed painting their favourite water-themed mascots, potting endemic plants while learning about Malta’s local flora, and conducting scientific experiments that explored water conservation topics under the guidance of skilled educators.
The Għajn Centre continues its mission year-round by offering a variety of educational programmes tailored for both primary and middle school students. Six different educational initiatives are aligned with school curricula and support lessons in science, history, geography, social studies, and environmental studies.
Each programme is interactive and includes activity books that students use to reinforce the water conservation and energy efficiency concepts they learn. These ongoing educational efforts are a testament to the Centre’s dedication to fostering a culture of sustainability among Malta’s youth.
