The Energy and Water Agency has recently launched the Alter Aqua Trail, an initiative that celebrates Malta’s rich water heritage while educating people about sustainable water harvesting practices to ensure future generations have access to this vital resource. This initiative is an outcome of the fourth phase of the Alter Aqua project.

Discovering Malta’s Hidden Water Heritage

The Alter Aqua Reservoir Trail offers an interactive experience for locals and tourists alike. Using a user-friendly web application, visitors can embark on a self-guided walking tour of 12 historical stops around Birgu. Each stop features a reservoir dating back to the 16th century, illustrating their crucial roles in flood control, water storage, and maritime trade. The app includes a live location feature, ensuring it’s easy to navigate and accessible for everyone, whether you’re a tourist or rediscovering your own locality.

The trail, developed in collaboration with the University of Malta, local NGO Il-Ġibjun, the Birgu Local Council and funded by The Coca-Cola Foundation through GWP-Med, showcases how old water management systems are being repurposed for sustainable practices today. For instance, the Victory Square in Birgu features a restored reservoir that now collects rainwater to supply the municipal water truck, supporting greenery in the area.

Bringing History to Life for Students and Visitors

In addition to the trail, the Energy and Water Agency has introduced a set of educational cards aimed at students, particularly those in Year 6 and upwards. These cards mirror the digital trail but are designed in a physical format, featuring photos, old sketches and historical facts about the reservoirs. They serve as a tool for learning and are in the process of being distributed to schools, including the Institute of Tourism Studies (ITS) for training aspiring tour guides.

The cards have also been provided to the Birgu Local Council, ensuring tourists and locals can pick them up during visits. Moreover, the initiative is being actively promoted at schools, the airport, and guesthouses participating in the GUEST project.

This project underscores the Energy and Water Agency’s commitment to preserving Malta’s water heritage while inspiring sustainable practices for the future.
