The Energy & Water Agency has launched the Energy Performance Assessment for Enterprise Scheme, a new initiative aimed at helping enterprises better understand their energy and water use, identify opportunities for improvement and make informed decisions to improve operational efficiency.

The scheme was officially launched during a business breakfast held at The Xara Lodge, Rabat, on 8 July. The event brought together enterprises, energy auditors and representatives from government, industry and academia to learn more about the support available through the scheme and discuss the role of energy performance assessments in improving efficiency and reducing energy and water costs.

The event was inaugurated by Hon. Dr Miriam Dalli, Minister for Energy, the Environment and the Regeneration of the Grand Harbour, who highlighted the importance of supporting businesses in becoming more energy efficient.

“Energy Performance Assessments are one of the smartest investments a business can make. Through this scheme, we are providing both Low Energy Consuming Enterprises and Medium Energy Consuming Enterprises with the practical support and expertise they need to better understand their energy use, reduce operating costs and become more competitive. This initiative is another important step towards achieving the ambitions of Malta Vision 2050 and supporting our transition to a climate-neutral economy. By helping businesses improve their energy and water performance, we are strengthening Malta’s competitiveness while building a cleaner and more sustainable future,” said Minister Miriam Dalli.

The Energy Performance Assessment for Enterprises Scheme provides two streams of support based on an enterprise’s average annual energy consumption.

Low Energy Consuming Enterprises may benefit from a free service that includes on-site visits by qualified professionals, tailored recommendations and consultations, and follow-up support where required. Medium Energy Consuming Enterprises may receive financial assistance towards the cost of carrying out an Energy Performance Assessment, helping them identify opportunities to improve efficiency and make informed decisions on future investments.

Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Energy & Water Agency, Inġ. Sandro Lauri, said the scheme reflects the Agency’s role in providing enterprises with the technical support and information needed to turn opportunities for improved efficiency into practical action. “This scheme reflects the Energy & Water Agency’s commitment to helping enterprises move from identifying opportunities to implementing meaningful improvements. By providing tailored assessments and expert guidance, we are enabling businesses to make informed decisions that reduce energy and water consumption, improve operational efficiency and strengthen their long-term resilience,” said Inġ. Lauri.

Beyond the launch of the scheme, the event provided a platform for discussion and knowledge exchange among businesses, energy auditors and other stakeholders. The programme included a presentation on the LEAPto11 project, a session on the standardisation of energy assessments, and a panel discussion entitled “Energy Audits: What Have We Learnt and Where Are We Heading? – Challenges and Best Practices”.

Representatives from the University of Malta, the Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority (MCCAA), industry and the Malta Chamber of SMEs contributed to the discussion, sharing their experiences and perspectives on current challenges, best practices and opportunities to improve energy performance across Malta’s enterprise sector.

The Energy Performance Assessment for Enterprises Scheme is open to enterprises registered with the Malta Business Registry and self-employed individuals with a valid VAT number.

Applications are now open. Enterprises interested in learning more about the scheme, identifying the support available to them or applying are encouraged to visit the Energy & Water Agency website or contact the Agency for further guidance.
