The Energy and Water Agency has recently launched the seventh edition of its LIFE School Projects, an initiative designed to raise awareness and promote water conservation among students. This program invites schools to undertake innovative projects that enhance sustainable water management. Key objectives include rainwater collection from gazebo and greenhouse roofs, installation of reverse osmosis systems, rerouting excess water to reservoirs, and implementing drip irrigation systems. Participating schools are also encouraged to lead water-saving campaigns, both on campus and through social media platforms.

Over the years, the LIFE School Projects have been pivotal in educating students about optimising Malta’s Water resources. These initiatives have fostered environmental stewardship within local communities and families, creating a ripple effect of sustainable practices.

This year, 15 schools participated in this call including nine primary and six secondary institutions—have been selected to participate in this initiative. The schools include:

  1. St . Patrick’s Salesian School, Sliema
  2. St. Augustine College Secondary Campus, Pieta
  3. Sacred Heart College Senior School, St. Julians.
  4. St. Thomas More Fgura Primary A
  5. San Ġorġ Preca College Valletta Primary
  6. De La Salle College Senior School, Birgu
  7. St. Michael School St. Venera
  8. St. Nicholas College Rabat Primary
  9. Maria Regina St. Paul’s Bay Primary
  10. St. Thomas More Fgura Primary B
  11. St. Margaret College Girls’ Cospicua Learning Support Centre
  12. St. Margaret College Senglea Primary
  13. St. Margaret College Vittoriosa Primary
  14. St. Margaret College Żabbar Primary B
  15. St. Ignatius College Qormi Primary

Each participating school will implement diverse and impactful projects. These include rainwater collection systems, reverse osmosis installations, rerouting surplus water to reservoirs, and the adoption of flowerpots and self-closing taps. Schools will also incorporate LED lighting and drip irrigation to further conserve resources. In addition, water and energy-saving campaigns will be actively promoted, extending their influence beyond school walls and into the broader community through social media.

As part of this year’s launch event, a special segment was dedicated to showcasing a project that the Agency has been developing: the Alter Aqua Cottonera Reservoir Trail. An introductory presentation highlighted this initiative, which provides an educational trail exploring Malta’s rich water heritage. The trail offers an interactive experience for locals and tourists alike. Through a user-friendly web application, visitors can embark on a self-guided walking tour of 12 historical stops around Birgu.  Students and teachers were also provided with resource packs and educational cards to encourage them to engage with and explore the trail.

The Energy and Water Agency eagerly anticipates the creative solutions and sustainable projects the participating schools will develop this year. These efforts serve as an example of importance to foster a sustainable mindset among Malta’s younger generations, ensuring a greener future for all.
